Banks have different rules when you use your debit or ATM card rather than when you write a paper check or make an electronic payment.
When you get a checking account, a bank will most likely ask you if you want "overdraft protection" when you use your ATM or debit card.
They may call this "courtesy overdraft protection."
If you say you want it, the bank will normally allow you to overdraw your account.
